Locked and Loaded

“for those days when I’m just on the edge……”

——————————————————————————————————

If I open one more piece of mail delivered by the US postal service; from one of my creditors; announcing the excitement of their “new” statement format, that their customers will surely find to improve navigation and reading of our monthly bill………………………………….

AND…………………….BTW…………………………………

to pay for this new format we’re increasing you monthly charge by $10 bucks……………………………..

I’m going to be like a rabid dog and come off the chain!!!!

It was just a few months ago I changed my cable TV package to the lowest rate to help manage my budget since becoming unemployed.

I have skeleton channels; no movie channels, no sports channels, no news channels, no food channels…………………….

well, you get the picture.

Local channels, CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX.  It works as long as I can get “The Big Bang Theory”, all the “NCIS”, “American Idol” and an occasional Texans football game.  Any extra channels are…………………………………..

well…….extra.

So……………………you increase my monthly bill; did you increase my channels?

Well, of course not.

If I refuse the new statement format, will my monthly rate go back to what it was??

Well, of course not.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

I know to some of you $10 bucks is not a big deal; you give your 5 year olds more than this for their allowance.

But I received two statements last month announcing “new” formats; my car insurance and my home owners insurance.  Both of which I worked diligently just a few months ago to get the rates lowered, only to have them increased…………………………..

each by $10 bucks.

Whatever happened to increases of $1 and $2 bucks?

It doesn’t sting quite as bad.

Not only have my monthly debts increased by $30 bucks, but my last two unemployment direct deposits were decreased by $10 bucks each.

Did anyone bother to send me an announcement about that??

Uh………..NO!!!

I’m not very good with math, but I can add and subtract and when you add $30 bucks to your monthly expenses and you subtract $20 bucks from your income, I think that’s a $50 bucks deficit and when one is unemployed and trying to make ends meet…………………..

$50 bucks is a lot.

“America!”

God Bless!
the red, white and blue,
where we’re free to live
and do what we choose.
We stand and salute
the flag that waves
for God and country,
the free and the brave.
We sing our anthem
loud and proud,
lifting our voices
above the clouds.
The stars and stripes
and fruited plains,
Gods grace
and waving grains.
Ocean shores
from coast to coast,
majestic mountains
a land of hope.
The life of freedom
doesn’t come free,
protected by people
I may never meet.
America the beautiful
I stand with pride,
I raise your colors
and wave them high.
Remembering the lives
that have served for me
to live in the beautiful,
land of the free. 5/27/2013

Brings tears to my eyes and gives me goose bumps every time I see it.

To Fail

I continue to work on the exercises out of my poetry writing book. This book is filled with exercises I would never even consider to be relevant to poetry………………..

then I complete an exercise and it amazes me how the mind works and the direction it can take just by a few “prompts”.

I don’t share all of my works from the exercises; after all, if I did what would I have left for my 2nd book?

BUT……………….I do share some of the things that I find to be intriguing.

My most recent exercise was writing a poem utilizing the “cut-up” method.

The what?????

What the hell is that?????

Let me remind you; I am not an “educated” writer. I write from my soul, my emotions, my events. I don’t really concern myself with grammar or punctuation and at times I make-up words.

That’s what uneducated writers do, because they’re uneducated, because they’re writers, because they can.

So………..some of you educated writers may be familiar with the “cut-up” method of writing; I had never heard of it. For those who don’t know, I will try to quickly lay it out for you:

Take a page of text; any page, a magazine, a book, song lyrics; cut the page length-wise down the middle, then across. Now rearrange the pieces making different sentences and phrases.

My first thought was, “How weird to do that to someone else’s work.”

Then I thought, “This could be interesting.”

I used 2 pages from 2 separate Glamour magazines. I cut my columns length wise (giving me 8 length-wise pieces), then I cut them across 4 times. A total of 32 pieces. I put them in a zip-lock bag and randomly drew out two pieces.

I have to admit my first attempt was a disaster as I tried to hard to use every word and every sentence. I put it away for awhile and then came back to it.

My second attempt was much different and little surprising.

I lined the two pieces up side by side and beginning at the top first sentence of each piece I began connecting words and phrase until I reached the bottom. I didn’t use every word, but I did use words and phrases from every line. I was a little shocked at what my mind picked out. Here is the results of my “cut-up” poem:

“To Fail”

You’ve of focus lens,
that hero, the writer;
someone all to beautiful,
broken up want to be.
My life was the way
at the end of a movie;
it was sort of clear,
kind of iconic;
being like I have fallen.

When I read it back; it struck me…………………….

do I see myself as a writing failure?

That’s what it sounds like to me. Even using someone else’s words paraphrased, my mind picked out words and phrases that; put together, says I fail at this little hobby of writing.

Did I like the exercise? Yes I did.

Will I use this method again? Yes, I think I will.

Do I think I’ve failed? That’s still a debate.

What did I learn?………………………

I’m an uneducated writer with a passion.

I’m not concerned with grammar, punctuation, proper phrasing or proper words.

I’m an uneducated writer that writes for me; lead by emotion and beauty. If that intrigues someone enough to read my work, I’m humbled.

But as a writer, educated or uneducated………………..

I write…………………..

because that’s what writers do.
